The 40th Anniversary Super Summit in Long Beach, CA, was an unforgettable gathering for Surfrider Foundation - including our Southeast Chapters! Volunteer leaders from Charleston, Charlotte, Outer Banks, Cape Fear, and Grand Strand joined over 400 Surfrider members, leaders, and environmental advocates from around the country to celebrate four decades of dedication to coastal protection and preservation.

Attendees were inspired by a stellar lineup of speakers, including Patagonia CEO Ryan Gellert, surfer and activist Greg Long, and renowned marine biologist Dr. Ayana Johnson. Their insights into environmental activism, policy, and community engagement provided powerful takeaways that we’re excited to bring back to the Southeast.

Throughout the Summit, our volunteer leaders took part in hands-on workshops and sessions focused on key areas like volunteer recruitment and retention, campaign planning, and community engagement. Learning more about Surfrider’s programs and sharing strategies on volunteer empowerment was invaluable for our Southeast Chapter leaders, who returned with fresh perspectives and ideas to implement in our communities.

One of the biggest highlights? Connecting with Surfrider Chapters and volunteers nationwide! This experience reminded us that our work is part of a larger wave of change, one that’s strengthened by the collective passion and energy of thousands of coastal defenders. And we had plenty of reasons to celebrate, too!

The Southeast Chapters were well-represented in Surfrider’s Coastal Champion Awards:
- Outer Banks, Charlotte, Virginia Beach, and Georgia were honored for their outstanding programs and community engagement, marking them as leaders in coastal protection.
- Additionally, Keni Rienks, Chair of the Cape Fear Chapter, was recognized with the East Coast Wavemaker Award, a testament to her inspiring leadership and commitment to her chapter and Surfrider’s mission.

This Summit was not just a celebration of past achievements but a powerful motivator to drive forward in our mission to protect and enjoy our oceans, waves, and beaches. As we look back on an incredible 40 years, we’re ready to charge into the next chapter, with our Southeast Chapters united and inspired to continue the fight for our coastlines.
